Danville, The Reckoning

First, right off the bat, the grand opening of the Fresh and Easy in Danville was a great event and a bit of a flenzy. On a personal note, it's been a long time coming for yours-truly as I've been a huge fan of Tesco and to a lesser degree Carrefour (but more on that in a later post).

I arrived around 9:00 AM for the 10:00 AM opening. Parking at Green Valley Center, where this Fresh & Easy is located, was fine in the early morning. Later upon leaving, parking vultures circled the lot for a any open space with many people parking illegally in order to make due.

There was a lone staffer outside who was letting potential customers know that the opening wasn't until 10:00 AM. All told, he probably had to tell upwards of 3 dozen people of the "official" opening time for the grand opening. He was very friendly, as was all Fresh and Easy staff, with just one notable exception, later in the morning, who took issue with my picture taking of the festive event. Most potential customers this morning had a Fresh & Easy mailing and seemed excited about the opening.

There was some indoor prep work and speeches being made prior to the ribbon cutting ceremony. The staff indoors were definitely bustling and there seemed to be at least 20 Fresh & Easy employees there to lend a hand. It was a mix of the local team as well as several special opening-team staff. A staffer did make it outside with samples of cookies, pita chips, and the unfortunate choice of cold lemon-aid on this brisk high-40's morning.

John, the store manager, took time to chat with me about logistics, distribution, stock, and the opening in general. They had full stock for the opening (although, I looked for an old favorite but didn't find it ... they must have discontinued the chocolate covered blueberries?) Nice guy for sure.

By the time of the ribbon cutting at around 9:50, up to 40 or so people had gathered. In attendance was Danville's mayor, Karen Stepper. The local charity check was also given away at this time to a swim team. The doors opened and the frenzy commenced ...

The store was, well, new. It was well lit, had a straight forward layout, and clean. All that said, the aisles were VERY cramped as it had room for just two carts, side by side, and it made navigating very difficult (especially with the constant stream of people in attendance ... 70-80 people at all times). In all honesty, I found myself there at the store for an hour and a half and could have spent another hour or two just looking around but put myself on a timeline to get out of there straight away when I realized I had just been aimlessly looking at all the shelves of product.

It had become so crowded that a line had formed for the register checkout around the 3/4 of the perimeter of the store. If it was self-checkout & bag today, I bet it would have taken me an hour to get out of there. Instead, with all the staff on hand, I was on my way in less than 15 minutes. There were two people per checkout to ring customers up and to bag the groceries.

I had also managed to score a free t-shirt and canvas bag ... the all elusive canvas bag that I could never get a break on getting a coupon for! Ha!

There was so much product to look at and I could have purchased everything I laid eyes on ... but I restrained myself (kind of ...). One of the main annoyances was the expiration date on the pre-prepared meals / refrigerated food. I had purchased food that (no joke) had stamped expiration day of today on it. Most food expired in 1-5 days (even those items seemed to expire very quickly). But seriously ... they had food that expired today! Don't worry, I had it for dinner.

The customers were in good spirits and all seemed excited about the new store and especially the prices. I did noticed two special "customers" who walked the aisles without a cart / basket who were wearing Safeway badge holders and examining Fresh & Easy product.

My bounty was fairly decent for my first trip (yet another post to follow), but had wanted to purchase so much more. However, with the accelerated decrepitude with the expiration dates, I kept my distance of the perishables until I knew I wouldn't be taking any lengthy work trips away from home.

Here's to a long and successful presence of Fresh & Easy in northern California.

See You in Danville!

So, sorry for all the posts without pictures recently! I do want to review some Fresh & Easy shell pasta I had ... honestly, the best pasta I've had for "Mac & Cheese". I have an old favorite recipe and the pasta was sublime for it ... but the review should be coming soon. OK, well, here is one picture ... hehe.

Anyhow, today is the big day and I'll be there waiting to purge the shelves of stock ... hope to see you there!

Here is a local article about the opening and with pictures of the Danville store as well!

Duped Again! T-48 Hours!

So, as the launch neared for Northern California, I went ahead and signed up for my free $.99 reusable bag. This was yesterday. When was the coupon expiration? Today!? So, I'm 0/2 to get my free bag coupon. "Buyer" beware ... just sign up the morning of the launch ... which I will do in a mere 48 hours from now.

Can you believe it? The Northern California fans of Fresh & Easy will finally have stores to call their own. In less than 48 hours, I'll be at the Danville store with everyone else perusing the Tesco goodies.

On that note, the store doesn't open at their normal time. It will be 10:00 AM, which is nice as some commute traffic can be avoided. Luck would have it that I am between jobs after today and will be able to leisurely attend the opening and take as much time as I want. Conversely, I'll probably be too busy with my new job to attend either the Walnut Creek or the Pleasanton openings. I'll have to see when I can swing by both, though.

10 Days and Counting

So, today marks the 10 day countdown to the opening in Northern California. I'll actually be between jobs so I'll be able to saunter to Danville and take my leisurely time at the opening.

I know weather is chaotic at best but it seems to be "meh" on the forecast ... 56 degrees and a 30% chance of rain. Who cares ... it'll be great inside! See you there!

Northern California Countdown ... 3 Weeks! And a First Trial Review. Dry Roasted & Unsalted Pistachios

Fresh & Easy launch in Northern California is approaching! Danville is only three weeks away now.

I still have to come up with a format of how to review the products but I'll still adjust the categories based on store categories as well as a 1-10 ranking of the product.

Here is a possible format I'll use as it just has three basic pieces of data (rating, price, category) along with the basic review. I was going to sub-rank other items on a scale of 1-10 (texture, flavor, etc.), but thought it would be best just to keep it simple and touch on the points in my review. I'll try the moniker of Fresh vs. Stale to denote what I feel were the high and low points of the product.

Dry Roasted & Unsalted Pistachios

Overall Rating
7.5/10
Price
N/A (Didn't have original receipt)
Category
Snacks

Fresh: Roasted well, good appearance, nut yield

Stale: Average flavor

Review: Overall, a tasty product and would probably only buy them again for recipes that called for unsalted pistachios. I acknowledge some people prefer unsalted / low sodium snacks, but these do lack a little punch from their basic roasted nature. I still gave it an overall high rating as they roasting process seems to be well executed and most shells were open (i.e. very rarely, a few were unable to be opened. They had a great texture and were not under-roasted.

Danville Fresh & Easy Drive By

I decided to take advantage of the wonderfully sunny day today and swing by the convenient Danville location. They are right off of 680 on Diablo Road (East side of 680). It's very handy for those people not local to swing by on their commute in either direction.

The location is set back from the road a bit, the sign a tad small near Diablo Road, but still a convenient location.

I can't wait to come back on opening day, March 2! Only a month away ...

There were only a handful of people doing outside prep work, cleanup, and some refrigeration people. The equipment, signage, painting, and generally all the TI work seemed complete. Minus the store stock and a trained crew, they seemed to be ready to open today!
